News from the Extreme World

March 2008

As the year really gets off to a start, we have been working away feverishly to ready three new albums for all fans of extraordinary music. The albums in question are CLAUDIO PARODI – “A RITUAL WHICH IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE (TO THE SMILE OF PAULINE OLIVEROS)”, MAJU – “MAJU-5” and THE ANTRIPODEAN COLLECTIVE – “THE MASSACRE OF THE EGOS”. In keeping with Extreme’s global reach, one is from Italy, one from Japan and one from Australia. Multiculturalism never sounded this good!!!

It takes an artist of true sensitivity to understand another great artist. With “A RITUAL WHICH IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE (TO THE SMILE OF PAULINE OLIVEROS)”, CLAUDIO PARODI has spoken with the musical language of Oliveros, a musician he holds in great esteem. Having successfully paid homage to Alvin Lucier, Parodi takes a very different strategy to embody one of the world’s leading proponents of deep listening music. Importantly he brings to the album his talents as a Turkish clarinet player. In capturing the essence of Oliveros, “A RITUAL WHICH IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE (TO THE SMILE OF PAULINE OLIVEROS)” reveals more and more on repeated listening. It is possible to simply let the music wash over you but there is so much more to experience. http://www.xtr.com/catalog/XCD-062

"MAJU-5" shows this Japanese duo of SAKANA HOSOMI and MASAKI NARITA at the height of their musical powers. MAJU have managed to find the "human spirit inside the machine". Equipped with samplers, effects and laptops and a sensibility that is unique to Japan, Hosomi and Narita continue to forge their enveloping alchemy in a way that is achingly beautiful. Their effortless interaction only heightens the truly special music they create. "MAJU-5" has escaped the realms of fashion to create a music that is timeless in its magnificence. It is a pure and personal expression that rewards and surrounds the listener. http://www.xtr.com/catalog/XCD-063

You have probably never heard PAUL GRABOWSKY play piano like this. In fact, you may not have heard many people play piano like this. THE ANTRIPODEAN COLLECTIVE is an opportunity for Grabowsky and four fellow Australian musicians of the highest caliber to exercise (and exorcise) their improvisational talents. “THE MASSACRE OF THE EGOS” represents one of the most adventurous albums in the history of Australian improvised music. Take five exceptional musicians and put them in a pressure cooker situation and see what results. Fortunately those five musicians are SCOTT TINKLER, JOHN RODGERS, PHILIP REX, KEN EDIE and the legendary PAUL GRABOWSKY.http://www.xtr.com/catalog/XCD-064]

Each album represents the true innovation and rewarding listening experience that Extreme is renowned for. It is also pleasing to see that each of these artists are regularly performing live so check the news section for upcoming dates.

As always, explore the music.
